It is well-known that soybeans relieve hormone deficient symptoms in postmenopausal women. In recent studies, germination of soy germ was shown to increase bioactive components such as aglycone isoflavones, ¥ã-amino butyric acid, and soyasaponins. Therefore, this study was conducted to explore the effects of germinated soy germ extract (SGE) on memory loss, obesity, and osteoporosis in an ovariectomized (OVX) animal model. We found that oral administration of SGE improved memory function in OVX rats using a passive avoidance test. Levels of leptin and alkaline phosphatase and adipocyte size were significantly decreased in the SGE-treated group. Moreover, administration of SGE significantly prevented OVX-induced bone loss in OVX rats compared to the isoflavone-fed group. These results indicated that SGE is effective for treatment of memory loss, obesity, and osteoporosis caused by ovariectomy in rats.
